Thanks to very sweepy editor at Associated Press, Led Zeppelin were briefly but globally announced to appear at this summer’s Bonnaroo Festival in the United States. Retractions were quickly offered when it was discovered that the original press release promoting the festival’s lineup had listed the up and coming all female tribute band Lez Zeppelin instead of the recently reunited supergroup. As a result, Lez Zeppelin are now enjoying the strongest publicity of their career, including a news report on MTV. Lez Zeppelin is the favorite Zep tribute act of the Namedropper staff, so we suggest that any disappointment might be short lived. Try not to Bonnaroohoohoo.

Ft. Worth native and music producer/sex symbol T Bone Burnett turned 60 on January 14th. T Bone is one of my all time favorite people, and possibly the most underrated songwriter on the planet. I was treated to a private performance at the Embargo Club in Ft. Worth in November by T Bone and friends Robert Rodriguez and Harry Dean Stanton. It was a very surreal evening but I know it actually happened because I can still play it on my camcorder. The performance was part of the first annual Lone Star Film Festival hosted by my friend Tom Huckabee. Tom tipped me off about the gig so I hauled A to FW. An amazing evening. T Bone is the coolest guy alive. End of paragraph, end of story.

I got a very nice email this week from a Mr. Zacron. Zacron is the artist who designed the eternally amazing Led Zeppelin III album cover. You can see more of his work at zacron.com. We hope to have more Zacron information soon!

Today January 9th is Jimmy Page’s 64th birthday. In observation of this most splendid occasion, I wore my special Led Zeppelin Holy Suit all day, the same one I wore to the big Zep gig at the O2 in December. By the way I’m beginning a campaign to rename Jimmy ‘The Pagan Bastard.’ Join me, won’t you?

I scored tickets to the big rock show, Led Zeppelin Nov. 26th at London’s O2 venue. Especially exciting is the addition of Pete Townshend as support act. The Stones will likely play is some formation or another, Jagger and Wyman having committed. It will truly be the Gig Of The Century!

The Namedropper Office was all abuzz yesterday when the phone rang and it was legendary label owner and A&R man Seymour Stein! We assumed he had misdialed, but no, he was phoning in to the Drop, to chat about an upcoming secret project we are working on.

If you don’t know, Seymour signed about 10-20% of your record collection; Talking Heads, The Ramones, Madonna, The Smiths…he is more of a rock star than most rock stars! Though the conversation was off the record (we never said we wouldn’t tease you…), we’re confident you’ll be reading more about Seymour in these pages soon.

Mr. S. was most delightful to speak with, coming off as more a fellow music fan than president of the beyond historic Sire Records, which he founded over 30 years ago. He rang us up to discuss the top secret project we are working on - look for an announcement soon. Did we mention yet that it’s a top secret project? That’s because it’s a secret. I’m so excited about this call I’m having my cell phone laminated!

LEZ ZEPPELIN CRASH LAND DALLAS

On Thursday July 5th, I attempted to catch my first gig by the all girl Zep trubute band, Lez Zeppelin. I was very impressed by the band’s take on “Since I’ve Been Loving You” off their debut CD released this week, so I cancelled my plans to watch Showbiz Tonight and raced to the House Of Blues in Dallas. After paying $12 to park, I was informed that the show was sold out. I decided that, to get my $12 worth, I would meet the band.

I ended up spending a few hours with their guitarist, Steph Paynes, from New York, in the plush, exclusive $2500 a year Foundation Room. Although I hadn’t seen her play, she carries herself as the real deal, a true to life rock and roll girl who lives and breathes the music she loves. Her feelings about Led Zeppelin’s music, and the many facets of our mutual idol, Mr. Page, run very deep. What could be a gimmick seems more a calling. She was absolutely wonderful company, and I hope to interview her for Namedropper in the near future.

In the meantime, order their CD from Amazon, and prepare for a shock; this girl can play Page-styled guitar like nobody’s business. I’ve been listening to Led Zeppelin since 1970, have seen Jimmy play about 25 times, and this is absolutely the next best thing to listening to JP himself. And we thought Led Zeppelin couldn’t get any sexier!!

CHRIS FRANTZ INTERVIEW!

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Today marks the debut of the newly improved Namedropper site. We have three new features up, so put on your rock reading glasses and feast your eyes.

Our exclusive CHRIS FRANTZ INTERVIEW begins what will be a monthly series of online interviews with great musicians, in a section called EMAIL A ROCK STAR! Each month we will…er, email a rock star. Even though we’ve just published Chris’ online chat, we’re already busy scheduling interviews for the next few months. Yes, we’d love to tell you who, and no, we won’t. That would spoil the surprise.

I’ve met almost every rock star that I ever wanted to, and Chris is absolutely one of the nicest and most genuine. When he says in the interview that he doesn’t feel like a rock star, he’s not attempting to be modest. He’s just a really nice guy who happens to have been in one of the world’s most important rock bands, Talking Heads (as well as Tom Tom Club). He deserves all of his success. And his beautiful wife Tina is of the same lofty character; maybe we’ll email her someday, too!

In this interview, Chris unexpectedly floored me with a simple comment. When asked how to save the music business, he said it’s up to the kids, and he’s right. For years I’ve been trying to figure out how to save rock and roll, and now I know that Chris is right. If rock and roll is to be saved, or reinvented, it will be by a 17 year old guitarist, not a middle aged person. Rock and Roll is primarily a vehicle to be directed by the young, and some of us older folks who worry about its demise should just let go, and let the kids decide. They might rock, they might suck, but ultimately, it is their domain with which to do what they may. In the meantime, older rockers should just do the best they can and give the kids something great to compete with/resond to.

Also new to Namedropper is THE WHORE REPORT. I first sent out The Whore Report in 2005 in an attempt to amuse my firends, and make fun of rockers who sell out (yes, I know, it’s an outdated concept). That 2005 essay is included as well as a brand new edition written this week. There is ALWAYS somebody selling out, so if you see a rock star acting stupid in a commercial, let us know, and we’ll get right on it. The war has been lost but this soldier bitches on.

Last but not least, we have added WALKING THE BLOG. In this bloggy woggy I hope to share my adventures as they happen, as well as go on about a lot of things no one cares about. So until we get a guest book up, please leave all your comments about the site here. And we DO want your feedback, as well as some reverb.

In closing, a special thanks to our webmaster, Commander Fred, who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping establish and improve the site. Without his asistance, I would still be trying to figure out how to spell ‘.com.’
